Ekurhuleni Emergency and Disaster Services takes heed of aftershock warning

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality is taking heed of the warning issued by the Council for Geoscience.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality is taking heed of the warning issued by the Council for Geoscience that the country should anticipate aftershocks following the August 5 earthquake.

Ekurhuleni’s Emergency and Disaster Management Department advised communities that when incidents of tremors are experienced, people should protect themselves in the following way:

  •  Evacuate buildings by following evacuation protocols included in emergency plans.
  •  In the event that evacuation from the building is not possible, people should hide underneath solid structures such as tables.
  •  Contact the 24-hour emergency communication centre to report damaged infrastructure and injuries.

EMM provided the following number for residents to contact for emergencies: 011 458-0911, 10177 from a Telkom line or 112 from a mobile phone.

In the meantime, the metro’s disaster management officials remain on high alert to respond to any incidents that could arise due to aftershocks and any other emergency or disaster incidents which may occur.
