Ms Sylvia Birkhead hosted a function on Mandela Day at the Ron Smith Care Centre to thank the volunteers for their commitment.

The volunteers were thanked for their help, especially with those residents suffering from dementia or who needed extra nurturing.

Motivational speaker Mr Jacques Terblanche, who was diagnosed with dopamine-responsive dystonia at the age of 27, was at the Ron Smith Care Centre to spend some time with the volunteers.

He shared his experiences about not having a disability, but rather having other abilities which are used to great effect.

“Despite living with a genetic movement disorder, this young man’s positive attitude and his will to get out there and make a life for himself as a walking example of determination was an eye-opener. His message was guaranteed to make you count your blessings,” said Ms Helen Petrie, the Elphin Lodge and Ron Smith Care Centre manager.
