Germiston City FC worked hard for their 2-1 victory against Bedfordview FC during their Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) cup tie.

The match was played at the Bedfordview Country Club on Saturday, June 31.

Bedfordview FC play in super league’s Division 1, while Germiston City plays in Division 2. The visitors started strongly and nearly scored in the opening minutes of the game, but the player narrowly missed.

Germiston enjoyed the bulk of the possession, finally scoring in the 17th minute, only for the referee to over-rule his assistant, disallowing the goal.

Bedfordview FC seemed to find their rhythm and began to probe the Germiston FC defence, spending time in their half.

At half-time, the score was 0-0. The home team started the second half with renewed energy and it took four minutes before their attacking streak was rewarded, opening the scoring with a well-taken goal.

Germiston FC’s goalkeeper, Brandon Greyling, kept his side in the game, making some excellent saves.

In the 15th minute of the game, a corner kick from Germiston FC player, Dembi Mayimele, resulted in a goal through a well-executed header to level matters at 1-1.

From that moment on, both teams went in search of the winning goal. Germiston FC broke through with a defence-splitting pass from the midfield which found striker, Tshepo Maiketso, who beat the diving Bedfordview ‘keeper, slotting the ball in the left-hand corner to make it 2-1 to Germiston FC.

Bedfordview FC fought hard to at least salvage a draw, but Germiston FC displayed resilience.

Germiston FC were still leading 2-1 when the final whistle blew.
