Ekurhuleni team assists in Soweto building collapse

One person was confirmed dead at the scene while five others were pulled from the rubble.

Members of the Ekurhuleni Urban Search and Rescue Team (USART) assisted yesterday in the rescue of at least five people after a structural collapse at Power Park in Soweto.

Search and rescue teams worked through the night to free those trapped.

One person was confirmed dead at the scene while five others were pulled from the rubble.

The hand of one of the men pulled from the rubble was amputated to facilitate his recovery in the early hours of this morning.

He was stabilised at the scene before he was rushed to hospital for further treatment.

Rescue operations will continue this morning with the assistance of the SAPS K9 Unit.

It is believed the men are part of a group of cable thieves stripping the abandoned building of cables.

Former NEWS journalist, Mr Dylan Slater, previously conducted a photographic model shoot at the station.
