Elderly give back to children

Three days a week, the elderly from these areas come to the Lombardy East care centre to learn a variety of hand crafts, such as knitting and crocheting.

The Thembalami Care Centre runs an outreach programme called Zamakuhle, which handed over nearly 100 hand-made teddy bears to children of the Angels Home Day Care in Alexandra on May 31.

The programmed is aimed at elderly people from nearby Alexandra and River Park.

Three days a week, the elderly from these areas come to the Lombardy East care centre to learn a variety of hand crafts, such as knitting and crocheting. Residents also enjoy morning a tea and lunch, and benefit from health and social awareness initiatives.

The centre caters for 74 children between the ages of one and six. A fun occasion was made of the hand-over with the elderly singing for the children and staff as well as interacting with the children.

According to Ms Lara Hurwitz, a social worker at Thembalami Care Centre, “The children were excited to receive the teddy bears. Many do not have their own toys and something we perceive as so small, turned out to be so precious to them. There was a sense of pride among the elderly who created these teddies and that they could make the children smile.” @ModderJourno
