The Bedfordview SAPS is looking for a man in connection with an armed robbery that took place in Bedfordview.

According to the Bedfordview SAPS communications officer, Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi, the armed robbery occurred after a large sum of money was withdrawn at a bank.

“A man withdrew a large amount of cash from the bank. As he exited the complex, and walking to the taxi rank, he was followed by two men. The two suspects entered the same taxi as the man, occupying the seats behind him,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

While the men were waiting for the taxi to leave, one of the suspects pulled out a firearm and threatened to kill the victim if he did not cooperate.

“The man handed over the money and the suspects fled the scene,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

Investigations are ongoing and no arrests have been made. Anyone with information regarding the suspects can contact Constable Masindi on 078 028 8007.

According to a statement released by the National SAPS, together with the South African Banking Risk Information Centre (Sabric) and Crimeline, residents should be alert and conscious of their surroundings when using an ATM.

When paying accounts, residents should consider options that are a lower risk, instead of withdrawing large sums of cash.

Residents should carry as little cash as possible and should consider paying accounts electronically.

According to the statement, small business owners who withdraw money for wages, salaries and to pay accounts, should consider alternating the days and times when they go to the bank.

They should also be more discrete about bank visits.
