Taxi rank problems are non-existent

In addition to the problems at the rank, other issues have been brought up including the non-payment of rent for the property.

Broken fences, blocked drains and unmaintained toilet facilities are just some of the issues council claims do not exist at the Eden Mall Taxi Rank.

The manager for the Edenvale City Improvement District (ECID), Mrs Linda McKenzie, told the NEWS that recently a report detailing the issues at the taxi rank was sent to council.

The response received stated that the problems are non-existent.

“The report included broken and stolen fencing, blocked drains, general cleanliness, unmaintained toilet facilities and bins which are never cleaned,” said Mrs McKenzie.

“How can the problems be non-existent when they are constant?” she asked

The NEWS has previously reported about these problems and a visit to the taxi rank last week revealed that these problems are still occurring.

In addition to the problems at the rank, other issues have been brought up including the non-payment of rent for the property.

“We have reason to believe the taxi association leasing the property has not paid rent for four years because there is no lease in place,” said Mrs McKenzie.

The previous lease agreement can also not be found.

“Apparently, in the previous lease agreement, it was the responsibility of the taxi association to maintain the property,” said Mrs McKenzie.

Since the end of the previous lease agreement, council has tendered contracts for the cleaning of the taxi ranks in Edenvale.

These tenders have often been under scrutiny by the NEWS as contractors consistently fail to maintain the taxi ranks.

The NEWS sent a detailed enquiry to the brand and communications department of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) on June 3 for comment by June 6 at 9am.

At the time of going to print, no comment had been received.
