Easter operations yield successes

Over the holiday period, static and roving roadblocks targeted hazardous locations to prevent accidents as well as criminal activity.

Two fatalities were recorded on Ekurhuleni’s roads over the Easter holiday period.

Operations conducted by members of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) over the Easter period started on Thursday, April 17, in all regions.

During the operation, motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol as well as speeding on residential roads and highways.

Pedestrians were also arrested for drinking in public.

“Road users were for the weeks leading up to the Easter weekend reminded through education campaigns of the importance of obeying the rules of the road in order to avoid unnecessary loss of limb and life,” said the spokesperson for the EMPD, Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago.

Over the holiday period, static and roving roadblocks targeted hazardous locations to prevent accidents as well as criminal activity.

“Taverns were also targeted with the aim of ensuring that patrons do not drink in public as well as making certain that they comply with the conditions of their permits,” said Supt Kgasago.

A total of 23 motorists were arrested under suspicion that they were operating motor vehicles while intoxicated.

“30 motorists were arrested for speeding in Ekurhuleni and a total of 434 fines were issued to motorists for exceeding the speed limit in locations identified as hazardous,” said Supt Kgasago.

Overall, a total of 1 123 fines were issued throughout Ekurhuleni and 13 vehicles were discontinued.
