Blessing to teach drawing

His work was described as reminiscent of the style of Miró.

Mr Blessing Ngobeni, a self-taught artist who was born in Tzaneen, will be the next demonstrator to visit the Edenvale Paint & Pallet Group on April 19.

Mr Ngobeni will demonstrate drawing a dream in mixed media with acrylics.

In 2007, Mr Ngobeni trained at the Artist Proof Studio in Newtown.

His work was described as reminiscent of the style of Miró.

In 2012 he was awarded the Reinhold Cassier Art Award at the Bag Factory.

In 2013 he participated in the Works on Paper Group Show at Gallery MOMO, was a featured artist at the FNB Joburg Art Fair 2013 and nominated as one of the Top 200 Young South Africans by the Mail & Guardian.

Mr Ngobeni began drawing in jail at the age of 14 to escape the daily drudgery and violence of life in prison.

“The first thing I remember sketching was a bird I had seen outside my cell. From then on, I was obsessed with sketching. From there I fell in love with art. I used art to free my mind,” he said.

Mr Ngobeni will demonstrate his art techniques at the Edenvale Community Centre from 1.30pm for 2pm.

Entrance fee for the event is R50.
