Support for those with Fibro

Mrs Stievenart’s daughter was diagnosed with Fibro at the age of 20 and she has lived in constant pain for over 15 years.

Edenvale resident and mother, Mrs Melanie Stievenart, hopes to launch a support group for sufferers of Fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia, also known as Fibro, is a chronic illness syndrome of which is little understood.

Mrs Stievenart’s daughter was diagnosed with Fibro at the age of 20 and she has lived in constant pain for over 15 years.

“I have wanted to start some kind of support system for Fibro sufferers for many years, especially after having seen how difficult it is to get support and understanding from others,” she said.

Mrs Stievenart aims to create a network of Fibro sufferers, their families and friends in order to bring encouragement to those affected by the condition.

“So little is known about Fibro and I believe that through the network, we will also be able to educate others,” she said.

Those suffering from Fibro often feel isolated and ignored “because they do not look sick”.

“I have walked this road with my daughter and know what other parents are going through,” she said.

Due to the nature of Fibro, those affected by the condition can often not leave their home. Therefore, weekly or monthly meetings cannot be set.

“Rather than have a regular meeting, I would like to make myself available telephonically to anyone who wishes to know more or who needs support,” said Mrs Stievenart.

“Fibromyalgia is a disorder that comes and goes in cycles. One day you feel fine then for the next week you are incapable of moving,” she said.
