First World Wildlife Day celebrated

The world celebrated the first ever World Wildlife Day on March 3.

The Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) and Heartland invited residents to join their celebrations on the day at the Modderfontein Reserve.

March 3 was chosen by the United Nations General Assembly because it is the anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which is a international treaty that aims to ensure global trade does not threaten the survival of listed species.

“This day presents an ideal opportunity to celebrate the extraordinary variety of wild fauna and flora in South Africa and the world at large. We often take for granted the critical importance of wildlife and natural habitats to the prosperity of humanity and the essential ecosystems services provided by healthy environments that ensure our continued wellbeing. There is a urgent need to conserve these habitats and species by addressing the escalating threats they face- such as illegal wildlife trade, irresponsible use, unsustainable development and pollution just to name a few,” said Yolan Friedmann, CEO of the EWT.
