Expats can also register to vote

Expatriates who are not registered, will need to visit their nearest South African embassy, high commission or consulate and take along their green, bar-coded South African ID book, smartcard ID or valid Temporary Identity Certificate (TIC) and their valid South African passport.

It is important that those who wish to vote in this year’s national elections in South Africa be registered to do so.

Expatriates, who are already registered to vote in South Africa, do not have to re-register.

Those who want to confirm their registration status can visit www.elections.org.za

Expatriates can register to vote at any time but to be able to vote in a specific election, they must register before the election date is proclaimed by the President.

The Voters’ Roll for a specific election closes at 5pm on the day of proclamation.

Expatriates who are not registered, will need to visit their nearest South African embassy, high commission or consulate and take along their green, bar-coded South African ID book, smartcard ID or valid Temporary Identity Certificate (TIC) and their valid South African passport.

Once a Special Registration Officer has verified that they are eligible to apply, they will have to complete a registration form and will then be given a proof of registration application form.

This is not proof of registration, but only that you applied.

Following this confirmation of registration can be obtained online via at www.elections.org.za seven working days after applying.

Registrations for expatriates will take place until February 7 during the normal working hours of the South African embassy, high commission or consulate.
