Toll tariffs – know what you will pay

In November, the Department of Transport published its toll tariffs for Gauteng’s e-toll freeways in the Government Gazette.

The tariffs were finalised on recommendation of the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) before publication.

Tolls will be levied by Sanral for every e-toll transaction on the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP) toll roads.

Levies must be paid by every user of the toll roads by no later than the seven day grace period.

Users of the toll routes are liable to pay for each e-toll transaction which will be determined by the class of motor vehicle used.

All tariffs include Value Added Tax (VAT) and may be adjusted by the minister each year, providing the adjustment does not exceed the Consumer Price Index calculated for the previous year.

Edenvale, Bedfordview and Johannesburg east suburbs are surrounded by seven e-toll gantries; Ibis, Kiewiet, Kwikkie, Starling, Loerie, Gull and Hornbill.

Sanral has divided all vehicles in to four categories; class A1, class A2, class B and class C.

A motorcyclist or class A1 road user who passes under the Kwikkie gantry heading south on the N3 between Modderfontein and Linksfield roads with a registered e-tag will pay R1.39, while a motorcyclist with a non-registered e-tag will pay R2.68.

A motorcyclist using the same gantry without a tag, but who is registered under his/her Vehicle Licence Number (VLN) will also pay R2.68.

If the motorcyclist does not pay the levy for using the gantry with in the seven day grace period, he/she will be liable to pay R8.04 for each transaction.

A day pass for a class A1 vehicle will cost R30.

A motorist (class A2) making use of a light motor vehicle who passes under the same gantry on the N3 with a registered e-tag will pay R2.31.

A motorist passing under the Kwikkie gantry with a non-registered e-tag, or a registered VLN number, will pay R4.47.

A motorist who has not paid his/her toll levies within the seven day grace period will pay R13.41 for each time they passed under the Kwikkie gantry.

A day pass for a class A2 vehicle will cost R50.

Class B motorists are those who drive small, heavy motor vehicles which are vehicles over six metres in length but under 12 metres in length.

Vehicles with a trailer, but which are less than six metres in length, are also classified under class B.

A class B vehicle which passes under the Kwikkie gantry on the N3 will pay R5.78 with a registered e-tag.

Vehicles falling under class B with a non-registered e-tag, or which are registered under their VLN, will pay R11.17.

Motorists who use the Kwikkie gantry and who do not pay within the seven day grace period will have to fork out R33.51.

A day pass for a class B vehicle will cost R125.

All vehicles which are over 12 metres in length are classified as class C vehicles.

Vehicles travelling through the Kwikke gantry with a registered e-tag will pay R11.55 each time it passes under the gantry.

Class C vehicles which have a non-registered e-tag, or which has a registered VLN number, will pay R22.33 for each transactions.

Failure to pay the levies with the seven day period will cost R66.99 for each transaction.

A day pass for a class C vehicle will cost R250.
