Retailer refuses to stock e-tags

“It is extortion. The government has no right to use fear to force the people to support e-tolls".

One major retailer in Edenvale has refused to stock e-tags.

The owner of the store, who asked not to be named, said despite pressure from national head office he stands by his decision to not stock e-tags.

“In my opinion, it is extortion. The government has no right to use fear to force the people to support e-tolls,” he said.

According to the store owner, one of his employees who live on the west rand had to purchase their e-tags from another outlet.

National chain stores which stock e-tags are Shoprite/Checkers, CNA, Pick n Pay and Spar.

“E-tolls are not part of a democratic government. Only those who are forced to buy tags for financial reasons have done so,” he said.

The store owner added that he had not received many queries from customers about e-tags either.

“This is not what the people want. I will stand by my decision to not stock e-tags. Yes we are a major retail chain store, but we are privately owned, so the decision to stock e-tags lies with us,” he said.

  1. Shining example of an democratically-conscious South African. Good on you man.
Let us know about more stores (businesses) that will not play the corruption (Racketeering) that the ANC is using so
    “un-democratically” on us South Africans.
PS. don’t vote ANC!!! This and all other forms of cancerous-corruption is their legacy.

  2. I suspect it’s one of the Pick n’ Pay franchise stores which are independently owned. I’ve just been to Checkers and they have a whole big binful there. Shame on them! I was SO tempted to knock it over!

  5. If more people had the courage of their convictions as displayed by this Gent, trust me, SA as a whole would not be in the dire predicament it finds itself in. Why, oh why are we as South Africans (especially the White population, not able to stand together and supportone another against such an injustice (e-tolls)????

  8. F@+k the goverment and their self help rich schemes. Government has no right to enforce any body to purchase e-tags. The less people who support them, the better are the chances of it being another big white Elephant, just as our soccer stadiums build, of witch goverment officials like Malema, to mention one, had shares in company’s offered the tenders.

Vote against e-tolling,@ u vote against enrichment of government officials.

  9. I for one I real support this retailer decision not to stock E-Tags,if we SA citizen can join hand in hand like we did with the apertheid regime we can sure win this battle and E-Tolls and will be history.Let stand up brothers and sisters and fight this disease called E-Tolls and the gantries on our Jozi national roads, bear in mind that together we stand and divided we fall

  11. GIVE THAT MAN A BELLS!!!
I wish all stores would follow this example and tell the “proud” ANC to go f*** themselves!

Our country needs responsible leadership and the poor need aid.
The government in charge are riding this gravy train and it appears no one is able to stop them …. beside US!!!

Remember when voting that the etoll is “proudly brought to you by ANC”

  13. Im pleased that u stand up for what you believe in
Lets all boikot the stores that stock etags as well
    Our rights are being abused.

  14. We’re taken for granted, unfortunately we’ve reached saturation point.this govt seems to think were rich.

  15. Good for him/the store. If only the big stores like Edgar’s, Checkers, PnP, CNA etc would also stand firm they would garner greater respect and client value and also show the govt that ethics and morality beat greed any day

  16. When the government owns up and explains what happens with the more than R51bn that it rakes in as a supposed road levy on sales of fuel each year, then they can start asking John Public to pay e-tolls – Oh! Wait! If that R51bn was spent on roads and not Nkandla among other things, we wouldn’t have to pay tolls at all!!

  17. Give that store owner a bottle of bells! Good to know their are honest businessmen who aren’t greedy fat cats like our government!

  18. You are an absolute legend! Thank you for taking such a big stand, we’ve got your back!

Going to go get some groceries to the value of an e-tag sometime soon!

  21. I don’t even reside in Gauteng, but visit there once in a while. U think this e-toll business is a sign of power hungry individuals who believe fellow South Afticans can be ill treated beyond their rights.

  22. This is great news, I just wish we knew who the retailer was so that we could support them. A pity there are not more who are prepared to stand up against the blatant corruption that is taking place in our country.

  23. I live in Jhb south, but I will drive on the e-toll route to edenvale to buy my grocceries from this man’s store. And not pay the e-toll for that trip.

  24. I am dead against tolls on roads in Urban Areas and therefore dedicated not to purchase an e tag. If tolling of our Highways succeeds, then this will be rolled out throughout the country to the detriment of the country. Goods and services will become more expensive. Life for all but the rich will become more difficult.

  25. where has ALL the petrol levy money gone????
5 million of 40 odd million pay income tax….we bear the brunt of petrol increases/electricity increases and with the tolling ….WE..the public will be hit hardest with all the food increases AGAIN. ENOUGH is ENOUGH!!!!!!

  26. Why is there so much pressure from Multi-national retailers to sell e-tags?
Possibly because the management and board members of “said” are all directly or indirectly related to Government officials.
    SUPPORT THE MAN..

  27. Salute to the shop owner. We shouldnt be forced to by e-tags. They cant lock up an entire country for not buying it.

  28. Thank you for standing your ground and in doing so helping those of us who have not crumbled and will do everything in our power not to crumble! We have to stand together on this! Majority rules! If the Majority do not get e-tags then the system will fail and they will have no choice but to find other means of recovering costs of the road repairs! We have to stand together that is the only way we will succeed in this fight! Come on Johannesburg stand together!!!!!

  29. Very Well Done to the Store Owner, great to see yet another person putting their money where their mouths are. Doing the right thing isn’t always easy especially considering who he’s facing in this particular saga.
