Wetland Buddies final clean-up

The final Illiondale Wetland Buddies clean-up for 2013 took place in and around the river banks near Alpine Road on November 23.

“We have a core committee of community members who have come to help us. It has been a good day as we have picked up more than two bakkie loads concentrating on litter.

“The polystyrene issue has been problematic. The paper cups and plastic plates block the river and create an overflow and that’s why we are trying to clean up the area, because we want the wildlife and birdlife back in the area,” said the chairperson, Lesley Thomas.

“Some of the items we found in the area included a toilet seat, drugs, a telephone, computer parts, cellular phone chargers, plastic and paper, and the biggest problem we found was the polystyrene.

“We have cleaned up close to 300 metres along the river. We would like to preserve these areas and create an area in which people can walk their dogs, cycle and enjoy the environment,” said Gary Thomas.

  1. A very good initiative indeed. A great well done job. Im a resident at 24 Saner, i had builders for the past 4 months, now 3 weeks back i had guys cleaning my yard. I was shocked and embarrassed this past Monday when i realise that those cleaners were throwing rubbish at the back of my yard close to my wall, So I will be cleaning up this Saturday. didn’t know about the wetland buddies clean up project initiative because my resident radio had technical constraints for the past 3 months, but now is sorted.
