ATM bomber could be linked to bogus cops

Two hijacked vehicles, police sirens, hammers, R-5 ammunition and police reflective vests were recovered

Items used by bogus cops were found at a property linked to a convicted ATM bomber arrested in Edenvale on November 14.

After the arrest of the man, follow-up investigations by members of the Edenvale SAPS lead them to a house in Lombardy East.

“We recovered two hijacked vehicles, police sirens, hammers, R-5 ammunition and police reflective vests,” said acting spokesperson for the Edenvale SAPS, Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts.

In the November 20 edition of the NEWS, it was reported that the man was arrested after raid at a house in Fifteenth Avenue.

“When we arrived there was no one at the house. Police officers found a stolen BMW 7 series and a device used to jam tracking signals,” said Lt Col Roberts.

“Officers also found papers for a vehicle rental company, a large number of fake vehicle registration plates and plasma screen televisions,” he said.

It was believed the person running the syndicate would rent cars, change the number plates and use the vehicles in criminal activities.

The man who was described as a career criminal has previous convictions for crimes, which include ATM bombings and the possession of explosives. He also has a number of pending cases against his name.

“Before standing trial in Johannesburg for his most recent arrest in Edenvale, the man will first face a number of charges in KwaZulu-Natal, relating to motor vehicle thefts,” said Lt Col Roberts.
