Dowerglen resident Mr Howard Bingham believes there may be something more sinister behind the recent theft of his wheelie bin lid.

Mr Bingham said the lid of his wheelie bin was stolen after it was placed on the pavement for refuse removal.

“Fortunately I was able to buy a new one for R150 from the manufacturer in Isando,” he said.

“I was told a few people every week buy new lids, so clearly the collection company is up to something and have found a place to sell wheelie bin lids,” Mr Bingham speculated.

In an attempt to prevent any future wheelie bin lid thefts, Mr Bingham said he will secure his new lid to the bin with steel cable.

Spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM), Mr Samuel Modiba said all wheelie bins supplied by the municipality remain the property of the EMM.

“Any damages which may occur to the bin must be reported to waste management services,” he said.

Mr Modiba advised that residents request information from the waste depots before taking any further action.

“A damaged bin will be replaced by the relevant division,” said Mr Modiba.
