Fireworks and your pets

Animals that are frightened or stressed can hurt themselves and possibly escape if left alone, and the results can be fatal.

Loud noises such as fireworks and thunder can cause a great deal of stress for some animals.

Some of the signs that your pet may be in distress can include trembling, excessive drooling, barking or howling, attempts to hide or flee, refusal to eat and a loss of bladder control.

It is important to note that if any of these symptoms persist after the thunder or fireworks have subsided you should take your pet to a veterinarian as soon as possible.

Tips:

  • Keep pets indoors. It is also advisable to close curtains and turn on the television or radio to provide a distraction.
  • Use a leash or carrier if you must be outside with your pet.
  • Practice fire safety by keeping your pet away from matches, open fires and fireworks.
  • If possible, make sure that your pet has time to “use the restroom” before the fireworks start.
