Van Heerdens together for 65 years

Morry van Heerden was in the airforce when he swept his future bride off her feet.

A young couple said “I do” at the Kensington Methodist Church on October 23, 65 years ago.

Morry van Heerden was in the airforce when he swept his future bride off her feet.

“He was so dashing,” said Elaine, who was still in school when they met.

Three daughters, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren later, the Van Heerdens still count their blessings. “We are extremely lucky; we have everything we could want: each other, a caring family and a lovely home,” said Elaine.

For the past 20 years, the couple has lived at the Rand Aid Association’s Elphin Lodge. Morry oversees the lush garden with its prolific birdlife, while Elaine enjoys craft work and sewing. A weekly tea party is enjoyed with fellow residents and the couple delights in their family and friends.
