Guard fights back

A security guard tried to hit a gunman with a brick during an armed robbery at a company on Serenade Road in Elandsfontein on September 22.

According to Bedfordview SAPS communications officer, Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi, the security guard was returning from a patrol when he was held at gun-point by three men as he entered the guardroom.

“They ordered him to lie down. The men then searched him and took his two cellular phones and the keys to the main gate. They also tied his hands,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

One attacker was left with the security guard while the others left the guardroom.

“A truck from another company drove up to the main gate. The man watching the security guard left to let the truck in and that is when the security guard managed to untie himself. He took a brick and threw it at the thief. He missed,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

The attackers fired several shots at the guard, but missed. The guard met up with members from the security company, who called the police.

“The thieves stole the tires from a truck, but not the contents,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.
