Councillors pay their outstanding bills

Debt deducted from salaries.

Ekurhuleni has recovered more than R237 000 of the money owed by councillors between October 2012 and July this year.

In the agenda tabled at the September council meeting, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) resolved to collect the money owed for rates and services.

This followed the call for action by the Gauteng MEC for Local Government and Housing, Humphery Mmemezi.

In October last year, the council was owed R283 348. In July, it was reduced to R45 553.

Those councillors who failed to pay the amounts they owed, had the money deducted from their salaries.

Two councillors who still owe money to the metro, were given until December this year to pay up.
