EMPD admits error

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) is investigating why one of its vehicles was parked in the yellow lane while its officers were working next to Eastgate recently.

This follows a complaint from motorist Ms Marianne Vorster, who noticed this.

“EMPD officers were writing parking fines at the shopping centre. I drove past their marked vehicle, which was parked on yellow lines close to entrance two. I do not understand how they have the right to issue parking fines at the shopping centre? Also, how can they issue fines to the public when they are in the wrong themselves?” she asked.

She said the officers removed their vehicle after they were questioned on their ability to issue fines when they themselves, were in the wrong.

EMPD’s spokesperson, Chief Superintended Wilfred Kgasago, commended Ms Vorster for bringing the matter up.

“Thanks for bringing this to our attention. The officer to whom the vehicle was issued to will be brought in to obtain a statement. The reasons as to why this obviously injudicious action took place will be looked into and thereafter the necessary action will be taken,” said Chief Supt Kgasago.
