Suspect shot, another arrested

One man was injured and another arrested on Boeing Road East, close to the Harcus Road intersection in Bedfordview on Friday afternoon, following a shootout with the police.

Bedfordview SAPS corporate communications officer, Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi, said a man was driving from the airport when he noticed a car following him.

“He then drove to the police station and gave the description of the vehicle to the police. Officers followed the description and the direction given to them and spotted the car Boeing Road East.

A chase ensued and the driver of the suspicious vehicle lost control and hit the embankment. Two men climbed out of the vehicle and began shooting at the police.

“The police returned fire and one of the suspects was struck. The other surrendered to the police,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

The extent of the suspect’s injury had not been established at the time of going to print.

Robbery of people returning from the airport has been rife in Bedfordview and the highways surrounding the area. This has led the Gauteng SAPS establishing a task team to deal with the problem.
