Shoot-out in Harmelia

Two men, who hijacked a vehicle in Johannesburg, were arrested in Edenvale on Wednesday after a high speed chase and shoot-out.

Acting spokesperson for the Edenvale SAPS, Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts, confirmed that the vehicle was hijacked in Brixton the same day.

Vehicle tracking company, Capital Air, picked up on the signal of the vehicle as it approached Edenvale, Lt Col Roberts said.

In an attempt to flee, the men were involved in an accident along Shelton Road in Harmelia.

Reaction officers from Capital Air fired a number of shots at the men when they tried to flee.

One of the men was arrested on the scene and with the help of a member of the community, the other man was arrested by the SAPS a short while later, Lt Col Roberts said.

A toy gun, believed to have been used during the hijacking, was found on scene.

We have reason to believe the men were also in possession of a real firearm which they threw away before their arrest, Lt Col Roberts said.

He thanked the vehicle tracking company, an ADT reaction officer and the member of the community for their assistance in ensuring the two men were arrested.

The men appeared in the Germiston Regional Court on Friday.
