What to do first before hitting the road – EMPD

“Check for warn-out tyres on the vehicle, because if they are not in good condition, especially smooth, they might burst when the tarmac is hot."

The EMPD is urging motorists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy as we are approaching a change of season.

As we approach the rainy season and hot climate, EMPD spokesperson Kelebogile Thepa stated that motorists need to ensure that the roadworthiness of their vehicles is up to standard.

“The vehicle pre-trip inspections are compulsory when a driver is about to drive any vehicle. Check and attend to dripping oil leakages, so that it does not affect other road users.

Take precautions before embarking on a road trip.

“Check for worn out tyres on the vehicle, because if they are not in good condition, especially smooth, they might burst when the tarmac is hot,” said Thepa.

Motorists are advised to ensure that the windscreen wiper blades of the vehicle are in good condition and do not cause any obstructions during rainfall.

“Your windscreen should provide a clear view. It should not be cracked, especially not on the side of the driver.

“When the road is slippery and wet, it takes longer for any vehicle to stop especially when it is carrying a heavy load,” she added.
