Reddam House hosts first 7s tournament

“Rugby is an amazing game you can learn so many wonderful values which you can apply to life in general."

The first-ever Reddam House Bedfordview U13 Sevens tournament carried a buzz of excitement.

Seven schools took to the field to test their rugby skills.

The August 12 event was made all the more special with the arrival of former Springboks player, now retired, Tendai Mtawarira and Springboks women’s player, Babalwa Latsha.

According to Justin Small Combe of the school’s marketing team, having Mtawarira and Latsha interact with the future of rugby in this country was a considerable boost in support of the event.

“This has opened the way for us to host bigger Reddam rugby tournaments in future and to attract more schools to the festival.”

He said the reception from parents, students and first-time visitors for these two players was extraordinary.

Springboks women’s player Babalwa Latsha and former Springboks player, Tendai Mtawarira, at the event.

“Additionally, Beast and Babalwa’s rapport with the many fans at the tournament was professional and sincere.”

Sharing his thoughts on the day, Mtawarira said it was fantastic to see the youth in action.

“I am a global ambassador of the game so I absolutely enjoy seeing children run around with a rugby ball
“Rugby is an amazing game. You can learn so many wonderful values, which you can apply to life in general,” said Mtawarira.

He said it was wonderful to see so many children participate in the tournament and was honoured to have such a close relationship with Reddam.

He said Reddam Schools provides scholarships to the Beast Foundation.

Mtawarira said together with Latsha he hopes to inspire the next generation of rugby players to reach for their dreams.

According to Reddam House Bedfordview, the purpose of the day was to create a competitive and exciting day for the U13 age groups.

Described as a resounding success, the first event of its kind saw 88 players participating in the tournament.

Competing schools included: Reddam House Bedfordview, Trinity Glenvista, Montrose Primary, Wendywood Primary, Edenglen Primary, Reddford Northcliff and Craighall Primary School.

The final results were as follows:
• Semi-final 1: Montrose beat Craighall 26-17
• Semi-final 2: Wendywood beat Reddam Bedfordview 25-5
• Bronze play-off: Reddam Bedfordview beat Craighall 24-0
• Final: Montrose beat Wendywood 17-12.
