Local school’s rugby team wins the league

“What we accomplished is evidence that nothing is impossible if we put our minds to it.”

Hoërskool Vryburger High School recently won the Lions League championship to make history.

The school lost in the finals of last year’s season, but this year, they won it, redeeming themselves.

The journey was difficult, according to coach Fana Moyo, because they encountered strong opponents.

“We had several new boys just getting into rugby. They had to be taught all the fundamentals during a rugby school camp,”said Moyo.

“They now like attending practice because they are more aware of the game,” he said.

Hoërskool Vryburger High School’s rugby team coaches Angelo Lete, Ruan de Lange and Fana Moyo hold the Lions League trophy.

“Since we had not won anything in years, as a school, we are delighted to have won the league,” added Moyo.

Nicolus Mukwembu, the team captain, said he felt proud to lift the trophy in his school colours.

“What we accomplished is evidence that nothing is impossible if we put our minds to it,” said Mukwembu.

Hoërskool Vryburger High School recently won the Lions League.

“As a school, we intend to visit Cape Town for a camp and socialise with other schools there. We may learn a lot from other coaches and seasoned players through this experience,” he said.

Coach Ruan de Langes said the trip to Cape Town would benefit coaches in terms of experience.

“Before we are coaches, we are teachers. The trip will let us connect with qualified coaches, and hopefully, they will impart some of their knowledge.

“We will now participate in the Noordvaal Cup competition. We will compete against the best schools in the province.

“As a school, we require sponsorships to help with transportation, accommodation and food costs, supplies, and more,” said De Langes.
