Local bands unite in the fight against GBV

“I think women’s bodies, non-binary and transgender bodies suffer a lot under the silent pandemic."

Residents are invited to the Torn Bailey’s Metal and Rock against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) event on August 19.

Organised by Desert Mother’s Angela Ferreira and Hardy Mills of Diverted Disorder, the fundraiser will support Jason’s Angels, an NPO aiding GBV victims.

The event will feature live art, music, and poetry.

“We named the event ‘Torn’ because victims of GBV have parts of themselves torn away. And those who do not survive, their surviving families were torn away,” said Ferreira.

The goal is to make this an annual event.

Ferreira said they wanted to help local charities that assisted victims of GBV and created awareness by bringing in artists to paint on the day.

Experience the live performances of local rock bands such as Diverted Disorder at Bailey’s in Bedfordview while they raise awareness around gender-based violence.

“That art will be auctioned, and proceeds will go to charity.

“We also have artists who will not be there on the day but will donate their art to the campaign.

“There will be a community canvas so community members who come to the event can paint or leave a message of hope,” she explained.

Fourteen bands from across SA will perform on the day as well as two poets and five fine arts, free of charge.

The bands to perform are Desert Mother, Diverted Disorder, Capgras Delusion and THE THR3 PROJECT.

The poets will include A Metalhead’s Poetry and Dark vs Light Poetry.

Expect Jesslyn Rose, Macaela Dawn Becker and Mark Shaun Hopkins for the fine art.

“In 2020, the president called GBV the second pandemic. It is still a pandemic, a silent one.

“I think women’s bodies, non-binary and transgender bodies suffer a lot under the silent pandemic.

“It is vital the community becomes aware of GBV and helps fund the charities helping victims and survivors because there are way too many victims.

“These things are hushed away, especially by privileged communities,” stated Ferreira.

The event will start at 18:00 at Bailey’s in Bedfordview.
