Bedfordview sheroes to take the centre stage

The event aims to reflect on the progress made since 1956 and the inspiring contributions of women in South Africa today.

The Ward 20 committee is gearing up to celebrate its local sheroes on August 9 at the Nicol Hotel.

Residents are urged to attend the event with the theme ‘Celebrating the sheroes of Bedfordview and beyond’, which is free of charge.

The main goal of the celebration is to emphasise that empowerment and community building are not limited to political spheres.

Speakers on the day will include Ward Clr Jill Humphreys as the keynote speaker as well as Marina Constas, chairperson of the Better Bedfordview NPO.

Organiser and Ward 20 committee member responsible for the women and children’s portfolio, Mona Naidoo said the speakers are women who have driven change in the community.

The event will also feature dance performances and music to highlight the artistic culture thriving in Bedfordview and its neighbouring regions.

“Art is also a form of empowerment for women,” said Naidoo.

Men are also invited to join in the celebrations.

The event will run from 10:00 to 12:30.

“We are looking for women who were part of the march in 1956 to share their stories with us.

If you understand the history of women, we may show up very independent today but do we have a voice and have we used our voice like these women of 1956?

“They had much less than we do now, less education and resources but the one thing they had was courage,” she said.

Naidoo emphasises that the feminine power possessed by women is integral to uplifting communities. And that despite the challenges faced, women have consistently exhibited courage, serving as powerful creators of life and proponents of positive change.

“The event is more than a celebration. It’s a reminder of the strength, beauty and resilience that women bring to the forefront of society,” she added.

Seats are limited. Interested individuals are urged to RSVP by August 4 on 084 817 2977.
