This day is observed globally on May 4 to recognise firemen’s efforts to defend their communities and the environment.

“It is also a day to reflect on and commemorate all the firefighters who died in the line of duty.

“Firefighters commit their lives to protecting life, property, pets, and nature. That commitment could take the form of numerous hours over many years,” said Ntladi.

He explained that it was an honour to have firefighters and their sacrifices recognised on a global scale.

“On this day, May 4, five firefighters died in the line of duty in Australia while fighting a bush fire,” said Ntladi.

“Before heading to a scene, every firefighter says a prayer because our profession is high-risk.

“The prayer gives us the strength and confidence that we will be protected while responding to an emergency.”

Ntladi said being a firefighter was a calling and required one to be physically and mentally fit.

“Counseling in our field is highly recommended. As first responders, we must stay mentally fit for the call,” said Ntladi.

“As a country, I believe we are on par internationally regarding firefighting.

“Our training is on par with worldwide standards. We had firefighters in Ekurhuleni who quit in exchange for overseas work.

“As a field firefighter before becoming the media liaison officer, I had the opportunity to travel to Japan and China on rescue missions.

“Our SA members were recently dispatched to Chile to rescue people trapped in a mine shaft,” said Ntladi.
