Water wastage in Bedfordview and Edenvale is caused by ongoing leaks

“The water network in this area in general is more than 50 years old and is of steel pipes."

The City of Ekurhuleni revealed that 29% of their system input volume is being lost in Bedfordview and Edenvale due to water leaks.

The CoE shared that Bedfordview and Edenvale are among the areas supplied by Rand Water meter RW1974 via a 400mm pipe.

The water leak at Essexwold Bridge on Boeing Road East has been ongoing since last year.

The RW1974 meter supplies both the central reservoir in Edenvale and the direct supply zone through two PRVs (250mm and 300mm diameter Pressure reducing valves).

“The water network in this area is more than 50 years old and is made of steel pipes.

“Such pipes are prone to corrosion and result in higher leakages,” said the metro’s spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini.

According to Dlamini, the situation is exacerbated by high pressure.

In essence, the turnaround time for reported leaks should be 48 hours which is not always the case.

“The long-term plan is to replace the network with more durable material.

“The current objective is to reduce leakages and the number of burst pipes through pressure management.

“Rand Water is struggling to meet our current demand.

“As a result, there is always a fluctuation in system pressure which normally result in an increase in the number of burst pipes, hence the prioritisation of pressure management,” stated Dlamini.
