This comes after Ward 19’s Ald Bill Rundle took Bedfordview and Edenvale NEWS to the site which had been abandoned and work stalled.

CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini explained that the city is appointing a new contractor. He confirmed that the previous contractor abandoned the site.

“Their contract also lapsed at the end of December.”

Once appointed, new contractors are expected to resume work on site towards the end of May.

Zweli said it is estimated that the project will be completed by June 30.

When asked Zweli said the amount spent on the project to date is R895,787.32.

“It is estimated that it will cost an additional R600 000 to complete the project.”

Rundle cited safety concerns regarding the uncovered holes filled with water on the southern side of the park where construction was also occurring.

The city was unaware of any open holes with water in them.

“As far as the attenuation chamber is concerned, we always try and make the area safe by providing warning signs on the approaches to the chamber and covering the hole around the chamber with safety nets.”

Zweli added that once appointed the new contractors would be responsible for rehabilitating the park.
