City responds to resident’s damaged car by unmaintained road

The City of Ekurhuleni said the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport is responsible for the road, not them.

In response to an article in the Bedfordview and Edenvale News’ February 15 edition, ‘FLOODS: car a write-off’, the City of Ekurhuleni has denied responsibility for servicing the Barbara Road offramp.

This comes after Eastleigh Ridge resident Kevin Thomson’s car was written off because of water damage to the engine. The car was damaged when it got stuck on a flooded road on February 3.

The disgruntled resident blamed the lack of road maintenance for the damage.

The incident happened after a night out with his wife. T

hey were returning from the airport and heading toward the R24.His vehicle got stuck on the Barbara Road offramp after he encountered flooding on the road.

In their response, the CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said the R24 is not the municipality’s responsibility.

“Route 24 is not a municipal road. It is a provincial road. The query should be directed to the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport, not the City of Ekurhuleni,” said Dlamini.
