Two suspects busted for bribery in Eastleigh by EMPD

Two suspects were arrested for bribery, and selling illegal cigarettes and alcohol after EMPD officers patrolling Edenvale responded to a tip-off from the community on January 17 in Eastleigh.

EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa said the task team and warrants unit officers were on patrol when a community member alerted them to possible illegal activities occurring at a store in the area.

The suspects, who are foreign nationals, were detained at Edenvale Police Station before they faced charges in court. They face charges of bribery, dealing in illicit cigarettes worth an estimated street value of R147, 000 and selling alcohol without a valid liquor license.

After responding the officers visited the suspected store where they discovered numerous boxes containing illicit cigarettes.

“Alcohol was also sold on the premises without a valid liquor licence, which was confiscated.”

Thepa said two men tried to bribe the officers with R2 000 and were arrested.

“The men face charges of bribery, dealing in illicit cigarettes worth an estimated street value of R147 000 and selling alcohol without a valid liquor license,” said Thepa.

The suspects, who are foreign nationals, were detained at Edenvale Police Station before they faced charges in court.

Thepa commended the officers for their work and the community member for providing the information.

“It is vital that the police work with communities to prevent such criminal elements,” she said.
