Jeppe Boys top performers commended

"This group was a special group - they faced the challenges of Covid-19. One must not forget that all these young men faced unique challenges over the last few years – having both their Grade 10 and 11 years disrupted by the Covid-19."

Jeppe High School for Boys class of 2022 produced an excellent set of matric results with top learner Devon Lacy obtaining nine distinctions.

The school achieved a 99,5 % pass rate with 74% obtaining a bachelor’s pass.

Jason Bailie obtained eight distinctions and Jordan Eshen and Calvin Stevens each obtained seven. Six learners each obtained five distinctions.

Acting headmaster Peter Murison said the school is incredibly proud of the 2022 matric class.

“This group was special. One must not forget that these young men faced unique challenges over the last few years having both their Grade 10 and 11 years disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“They have shown resilience and still aimed for excellence,” said Murison.

“Our top achievers continued to maintain the brilliant standard of excellence within our school and the continued drive to see every Jeppe boy strive for academic success is well and truly embedded,” said Murison.

He thanked the educators for their hard work.

“The passion, hard work, and care our team of educators pours into the lives of learners who pass through their classrooms are inspiring.

“They too should take great pride in the results,” said Murison.

The sentiment was echoed by Collette Rattray, deputy principal in charge of academics.

She emphasised that success at this level is built on the hard work done by educators at the junior level.

“Educators insisting on high levels of excellence from a young age plays a huge part and is in keeping with our policy of prioritising academics at all times,” said Rattray.

Top achiever Bailie was awarded an honours blazer at the final assembly for the 2022 matrics. He was the fifth Jeppe boy to receive the school’s highest honour in its 132-year history.

The honours blazer is presented to a learner who received full colours in a sport, full colours for academics and full colours in a cultural activity.

The first blazer was awarded in 1999 to Jason Tee who is the deputy headmaster.

In response to achieving academically and managing activities, Bailie commended Jeppe Boys for implementing a schedule to accommodate academics and activities.

“I learned to manage my time and made sure I give everything my best,” said Bailie.

He plans to study mechanical engineering at Wits University.
