Clean ups improve the state of Edenvale Cemetery

“The cemetery is looking fantastic and once the park department is available, I will request some of the trees in Edenvale Cemetery to be trimmed."

After community members raised concerns about the condition of Edenvale Cemetery, contractors continued working to clear vegetation at the facility.

Contractors started clearing vegetation at the municipal property on January 12 and have continued to do so.

Environmental portfolio committee member of Ward 18 Lisa Atkins said the contractors have worked tirelessly to ensure the cemetery is maintained.

She said a small team was left at Edenvale Cemetery as the rest of the contractors progressed to the Eighth Avenue Cemetery.

Once Eighth Avenue Cemetery is completed, they will progress to Sebenza Cemetery.

“The cemetery is looking fantastic and once the park department is available, I will request some of the trees in Edenvale Cemetery to be trimmed,” said Atkins.

In light of the progress Atkins and Ward 18 Clr Heather Hart hope to re-establish the Friends of Edenvale Cemeteries, a volunteer group focused on preserving and maintaining Edenvale’s cemeteries.

Once established Atkins hopes to draw on resources from the community to improve Edenvale Cemetery and others.

Some things she hopes to see improved include signposts, the removal of weeds from graves, and assisting with general maintenance at the facility.
