For the love of summer hiking at Melville Koppies

Visitors to Melville Koppies are likely to hear a cacophony of bubbling and chirping from above.

There are some birds that move with the seasons.

They don’t mind travelling as long as the destination has the right food.

Those who follow the sound will see European bee-eaters gliding, swooping and diving for insects which they catch while in flight.

Often, they’re gliding among swallows who are also summer visitors.

Both species go back north to breed once the days turn cold and the insects diminish.

Melville Koppies Nature Reserve and Heritage Site is open on Sunday mornings from 08:00 to 11:30.

Visitors can guide themselves along the many paths, test their fitness on the 5km hike or teach themselves about the history of the Koppies on the self-guided heritage trail.

Alternatively, for those who want to learn more about the history, geology, and plants of the area, a guide may be booked by calling 079 532 0083.

Entry fees are R80 for adults and R40 for children.

Security on the Koppies is provided and visitors can park in secure parking opposite the Melville Koppies entrance at Marks Park in Judith Road, Emmarentia.
