Police investigate illegal mining during joint operation in Meadowdale

Bedfordview SAPS joined by Bedfordview CPF and private security companies conducted a station commander operation during which allegations of illegal mining were investigated.

Bedfordview SAPS corporate communication officer sergeant Lillian Modiga said the two-phase operation was conducted on October 14.

Security companies who participated included Mamba, Cortac, Raa VIP technical force, Rag, ADT and Vision Tactical.

“The main focus of the operation was to monitor the location where illegal mining was identified in the Meadowdale area,” said Modiga.

The stakeholders also conducted a roadblock in Morning Hill on Boeing Road East.

Modiga said in Meadowdale no illegal miners were found.

“We visited the identified location in Meadowdale and we observed that there were no ongoing activities and no one was found,” said Modiga.

She said stakeholders noticed a few holes where the individuals tried to dig.

“Only clothes and a bag of soil were found. Mpho Lehlaganyane from the Department of Minerals and Resources said the site is under investigation,” said Modiga.

Following phase one, Modiga said the stakeholders continued to Boeing Road East.

“During the high visibility and stop and search operation, 112 vehicles were stopped and 171 people were searched,” said Modiga.
