Councillor raises concerns of illegal mining in Meadowdale

“SAPS have asked us not to reveal a lot it is under investigation, they are going through everything."

Suspected illegal mining activity was recently unearthed in Meadowdale.

Ward 92 Clr Kade Guerriero said the suspected mining activity, occurring on and around the property of a private business, was discovered roughly a month ago.

He said the illegal operation was discovered by security personnel patrolling the property.

Guerriero said businesses expressed concerns about the safety of their staff.

“SAPS, EMPD, DEMS and the Department for Minerals Resources and Energy are working on the problem,” said Guerreiro.

“They have conducted several operations.”

Guerriero said it is believed the individuals are gaining access to the property from Essex Street.

“SAPS have asked us not to reveal a lot of information as investigations continue,” said Guerriero.

Bedfordview Police Station’s corporate communication officer Sergeant Lillian Modiga said the police station knew nothing about the illegal mining.

When questioned if the suspected mining activity was linked to sinkholes in the area, Guerriero said it was possible.

“As the area formed part of the old Primrose gold mine, the odds of having tunnels and shafts underneath us is a high possibility,” said Guerriero.

“Obviously with illegal mining, I suppose wherever there is an open space these criminals will make use of it.”

Guerriero said illegal mining is a national problem and Ekurhuleni is no exception. He assured the community that the matter would be resolved.

“Multiple spheres of government are involved.”

Guerreiro said he was impressed at the speed at which all departments got involved.

To Guerriero’s knowledge, this is the only location in ward 92 where illegal mining is taking place.

“Neighbouring councillors will tell you that it is a nightmare in their wards.”

Despite the mining activity, Guerriero said that no one strangely sees the miners.

“These individuals are clever in what they do, they know it’s illegal and must be operating at night.”

Guerriero suspected it is also easy to hide on such a large piece of property.

He is concerned about how it will impact Ward 92’s industrial hub.

On October 11 requests for comment were sent to EMPD, CoE’s DEMS, and the Department for Minerals Resources and Energy.
