Athletics season kicks off in Germiston

The meeting focused on the sub youth age category (primary age group), which saw great support in the number of athletes and spectators attending on Saturday.

The day started off with exceptional performances in the boys U11 high jump, girls U11 long jump, boys U13 shotput and girls U13 javelin events.

One of the best events which got the spectators’ attention was the boys U11 long jump. Khotso Motsamai of Nedbank broke the provincial record, jumping a distance of 5.13m.

He was followed by a strong challenge from Kevin du Plessis from Boksburg Athletics Club, who finished second with a 4.63m jump.

Central Gauteng Athletics PR and Communications Intern, Nongcebo Siziba, said another stunning performance was the girls U13 discus event. Landsberg Chanlee secured first place with a distance of 35,19m.

Her team mate Vermaas Marni came second with a distance of 34,10m. The third position went to Venter Kaylin with a distance of 31,80m.

The provincial championships and inter-provincial championships will take place in Pretoria in November.
