Based at Edenvale Community Centre near the corner of Van Riebeek Avenue and Second Street the society is open on weekdays and hosts a variety of activities for the community’s elders.

Some of the activities it hosts include bingo, line dancing, gym, yoga, table tennis, darts, art classes, card games and fitness gym to music.

Chairperson Ria van der Linde said the society’s numbers are growing in light of the easing of lockdown restrictions.

“Community members have started showing an interest and visiting the organisation again.”

She said the ESCS family is home to a variety of characters ranging from a renowned sculptor, a published playwright and a community member who has written and published her book.

“One of the nice things about the society is the fact that everyone is of a similar age. They share common interests and all have something to talk about with one another.”

Ria said although membership has grown, the society hopes to attract more community members.

Annual membership to the society will cost community members R155.

Committee member Linda Ranwell said the organisation also offers daily cooked meals at R45 for members and R55 for non-members. These must be booked a day in advance.

She explained to help cover costs the society sells items donated from the community in its second-hand store.

Linda said with the arrival of summer community members cleaning out their homes should consider donating unwanted items still in a good condition to the society.

“We need anything and everything. If it’s in a good condition we will take it,” said Linda.

Ria said if the society gets donations that it knows other organisations, like Edenvale Care Centre Hospice, Tails and Whiskers and the Lions, can make better use of it and will donate to those organisations.

“These organisations specialise in their fields, so there is no point in us holding onto donations they can use,” she said.

Ria said where possible, Edenvale Senior Citizens Society collects donations.
