Using CCTV to fight crime in Ekurhuleni CBDs

MMC for Community Safety Lethlogonolo Moseki said the Joint Operation Centre entails a camera system that operates 24 hours to monitor municipal buildings.

Two suspected drug dealers were apprehended with the help of the city’s CCTV cameras on September 17.

MMC for Community Safety Lethlogonolo Moseki said the Joint Operation Centre entails a camera system that operates 24 hours to monitor municipal buildings around Germiston and Boksburg.

“The EMPD in this regard monitor activity like cable theft, protests or any criminal elements that lead to damage to infrastructure,” said Moseki.

“Two men were spotted selling crystal meth and officers were sent to the scene to investigate.

Officers on the ground are proactively dispatched to attend to any issues that are picked up from the monitoring of cameras and make necessary arrests if need be,” said Moseki.

“Kempton Park CBD also needs to be prioritised with CCTV cameras as it is also a hub for narcotics and other illegal activities,” he said.
