The Germiston-based NPO is the only patient group in South Africa dedicated to bringing promising clinical trials and treatments to South Africa.

They offer free counselling, education, information and referrals to patients with retinal genetic vision loss and facilitate genetic testing.

Administrator Linda Vogelsaid said all proceeds from the event will go towards supporting and empowering people with retinal vision loss and advocating for fair and accessible treatments.

“Our main sponsor is the Dis-Chem Foundation. Retina South Africa was established in 1980 as the South African Retinitis Pigmentosa Society,” said Vogel.

“On September 6, the format of the day will be fourball alliance, scramble drive and two scores to count.

“Cost is R5 000 per fourball, which includes refreshments on arrival, halfway house lunch, dinner and prize-giving. Excludes carts and caddy fees. The first tee-off is at 11:00.

“Retina SA remains a patient-driven action group that has offices or groups in all the major centres in the country,” said Vogel.

Their focus is:

1. Supporting the retinal degeneration research project at the University of Cape Town to find the genetic mutations in South African families.

2. Facilitation of genetic testing to identify those patients who will benefit from clinical trials and imminent therapy.

3. Public awareness of retinal degeneration.

4. Patient support including education, referral and intervention.

5. Collaboration with local and international agencies and researchers.

6. Fundraising to support this work.

“We are founding members of Retina International with headquarters in Ireland. Membership is open to all patients, family members and persons who wish to support our quest to find treatments for retinal blinding conditions,” said Vogel.
