Bedfordview Dojo students return with medals

The tournament held in Durban, saw karateka competing from as far afield as Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

Twelve karatekas representing the St Andrews Goju Kai Karate Academy in Bedfordview were recently selected to represent South Africa at the 19th UFAK Southern African All Styles Karate Championships.

The tournament, held in Durban, saw karatekas competing from as far afield as Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

Official SASCOC national colours were awarded to sempai Jesse Sim, Connor Hundermark, Chloe Keartland, Mikayla Alves, Phumelele Ngwenya, Gabriella Toweel, Tyler Kabali-Kagwa, sensei Bongi Ngwenya and sensei Bradley Ho-Tong, while Karate South Africa colours were awarded to Cristiano Coelho and Connor Falls.

The Bedfordview dojo had 12 athletes in the national team and brought home 13 medals from the championships.

Each karateka came back with a medal, while sempai Jesse Sim and Tyler Kabali-Kagwa earned two each.
The 13 medals consisted of four gold, four silver and five bronze.

The following  are Individual results:

-Sempai Jesse Sim won a gold medal for senior men’s kata (region champion) and a silver medal for senior team kata.

– Sensei Bradley Ho-Tong won a silver medal for senior team kata.

– Sensei Bongi Ngwenya won a silver medal for senior team kata.

– Connor Hundermark won a gold medal for boys 12-13 kata (region champion)

– Tyler Kabali-Kagwa won a gold medal for boys 10 – 11 kata (region champion) and a bronze medal for kumite

– Gabriella Toweel won a gold medal for girls 10-11 kata (region champion)

– Darshan Govender won a bronze medal for boys 10-11 kumite

– Chloe Keartland won a bronze medal for girls 10-11 kumite

– Mikayla Alves won a silver medal for girls 12-13 kumite

– Connor Falls won a bronze medal for boys 10-11 kumite

– Cristiano Coelho won a bronze medal for boys 10-11 kata

The dojo now looks forward to competing at the renowned Arnold Classic Karate Championships to be held in Gauteng.
