Northrand District Scouts take to the water

This year was the first time the competition was hosted since 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic

Scouts from across Gauteng braced the cold and wet weather to participate in the annual Scouts Kon-Tiki raft competition at Arrowe Park Scout Grounds

Over the weekend of May 20 to 22, six Scout Troops from the Northrand District, including members of the First Hellenic Scout Group, launched rafts and joined 65 other troops on the water at Homestead Dam in Benoni.

The district commissioner of the Northrand District Andrew Campbell said this year was the first time the competition was hosted since 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The rafts are built from barrels, and poles and held together with ropes. No nails, screws or other permanent fixings are allowed.

Andrew said the Scouts are all under the age of 18 and adult assistance in building the rafts is not permitted.

Over 60 teams entered this year’s Kon-Tiki competition held at Arrowe Park in Benoni.

“Launching a seaworthy raft is quite an accomplishment,” highlighted Andrew.

He said the same skills that are used to build rafts can also be used by the Scouts to build bridges, towers and other structures.
