On April 9 the owner of African Reptiles and Venom, Mike Perry, will enlighten conservation society members and guests about how snake venom is used to help save lives.

The talk will be held at Modderfontein Reserve’s education centre at 14:00.

He will also show a live specimen.

Mike first developed an interest in snakes in 1963 and two years later at the age of 10 he started catching them.

He has personally experienced two serious snakebites, administered by a puff adder, and a forest cobra.

Besides supplying specialised snake handling equipment, Mike offers a range of courses including snake identification, handling and first aid for snakebites.

The courses are all Field Guides Association of Southern Africa accredited. The snakebite treatment course is also accredited by the Health Professionals Council of SA.

An entrance fee of R50 will be charged to cover expenses. Visitors are welcome, with children under 12 not being charged.

Covid-19 protocols will be maintained and those attending are requested to bring their own chairs.
