The case was postponed, again.

The alleged Ekurhuleni serial rapist, Nkosinathi Phakathi, will remain in custody after his bail application was again postponed due to the unavailability of his attorney.

The accused briefly appeared in the Daveyton Magistrate’s Court on February 17 to face 61 counts of rape, two counts of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and robbery.

His lawyer was reportedly not present in court due to being ill. The matter was postponed to February 25.

On January 18, it was also postponed after his attorney failed to formally apply for bail by reading the accused’s application into the record.

Members of the Methodist Wattville Outreach Programme attended the court proceedings.

The suspect was arrested in March last year in Barcelona, Etwatwa, after police searched for him for nearly nine years following a series of rape cases reported in various areas.

In July, Phakathi abandoned his bail application.

Gender-based violence groups from Wattville, Daveyton, Kingsway, Putfontein and Etwatwa attended the court proceedings to show support for the victims.

Human rights members from the Methodist Wattville Outreach Programme also attended.
