Miss Earth South Africa encourages people to play their part

Nompumelelo is set to be announced as a Brand South Africa, Play Your Part ambassador later in the year where she will continue her work in communities and inspire others.

The Miss Earth South Africa team last week helped to rejuvenate a  vegetable garden in Kliptown, Soweto, with the hopes it will help two local residents to be able to grow enough vegetables to sell.

Ella Bella, director of Miss Earth South Africa leadership programme, said, “We don’t want to just add to your today, we want to add to your tomorrow. This rejuvenation project in Kliptown is not just about building or adding to a vegetable garden, it’s about providing an opportunity for growth – growth of a community through food security.”

The Kliptown area is one of the forgotten areas in Soweto across from Walter Sisulu Square.

The square is where in 1955 the Congress of the People gathered to sign the freedom charter, which was incorporated in the constitution in 1996.

Despite the area’s lack of service delivery, Pricilla Nkqwili has become a beacon of hope for the community by establishing the Kliptown Gogos.

Bella further said, “Pricilla has created opportunities for a group of elderly ladies called the Kliptown Gogos to stitch, croquet and quilt different items like aprons, picnic blankets and other items to sell.”

Through the work of Pricilla and her two helpers, Tshepang Motaung and Percy Mabuza, they have managed to start a vegetable garden with good produce.

With the support of Miss Earth South Africa, the objective was set to develop the garden to a level of sustainable farming.

“The support from our partners Skin Renewal, Brand South Africa, Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment, Lifestyle Garden and Home, Plastics SA, AST Recycling and Interwaste Environmental Solutions, has made it possible for this project to develop to the next level. It’s not just about a vegetable garden, it’s about creating opportunities and the possibility to prosper.

“Miss Earth South Africa 2021 Nompumelelo Maduna is taking part in the online International Miss Earth. Part of the requirements of being a Miss Earth South Africa is to galvanise a community project where it creates sustainability and greening in different communities,” said Bella.

Nompumelelo is set to be announced as a Brand South Africa, Play Your Part ambassador later in the year where she will continue her work in communities and inspire others.
