Judy Croome speaks poetry with Writers 2000

Highlighting the relevance of poetry, Judy said it is a bridge between the light and the dark.

South African novelist, short story writer and poet Judy Croome gave a presentation on poetry and what it takes to be a poet when she was invited to be the Writers 2000 October guest speaker.

Judy, who has a Master of Arts (English) degree from the University of South Africa and lives in Johannesburg, spoke to Writers 2000 members on October 9.

She advised members that to become a poet, one needs the ability to be detached and look beyond the commonplace and become universal in your outlook.

Quoting Georg von Hardenberg’s Poetry Heals the Wounds Inflicted by Reason, she said you need to love the language.

She explained to the members that the types of poetical language include literal language, figurative and symbolic before using John Keats Ode to Autumn, which combined all three, as an example.

Judy highlighted that there are also poetic devices, such as making music, creating rhythm and adding deeper meaning.

She told members to always consider the choice of words, the word order and that less is always more.

Highlighting the relevance of poetry, Judy said it is a bridge between the light and the dark.

She said it provides an escape from the harsh reality of the world we live in and offers us an ideal that can fill us with hope.

The online talk can be viewed on the Writers 2000 Facebook page.
