Two-day canoeing championship to be held at VLC

Entries close on May 7 at noon, no entries will be allowed on the day.

Following a successful inaugural marathon series during April, Victoria Lake Club is set to host Gauteng Canoe Union’s (GCU) Marathon Championships.

Organised by GCU, the championships will be held on May 8 and 9. Participants must enter online using the Canoeing South Africa (CSA) online entry system at www.canoesa.com

Entries close on May 7 at noon, no entries will be allowed on the day. The first race day to be held on May 8 and will see the K1 paddlers and the guppies compete. Registration on May 8 for the guppies starts at 7am with the race scheduled for 10am.

The main event, the K1 category, will include all age groups except the guppies will start at 8am. Portages are planned into the race for paddlers competing in the u-14 group and upwards.

Race fees for day one are R50 for juniors and R100 for seniors. The second race day, May 9, will be held for the K2 paddlers only. Registration opens starts at 7am with races expected to start at 8am. Race fees for day two are R50 for juniors and R100 for seniors per paddler, not per boat.

Race information:

•All entrants must be registered members of a canoe club affiliated with CSA.
•All entrants must at least be certified CSA flat water proficient.
• Limited parking is available at VLC, overflow parking across the road with a car guard.

Safety information

Personal Floatation Device’s (PFD) are mandatory for all juniors up to and including u-14. Al other paddlers are responsible for their safety. Should the racing conditions deteriorate, this may need to be revised on the day, participants are asked to ensure they have a complaint CSA PFD available should conditions warrant a change.

Correct boat numbers are required and buoyancy is required per ICF regulations, minimum 10l per boat. NSRI will be on-site, a VLC rescue craft will be on the water and St Johns Ambulance service will be on-site on both days.

Important Covid-19 protocol for the event:

•All entrants, support staff, race officials, and medical staff will be screened at the venue.
•Anyone deemed to be high risk as per the screening criteria will be asked to leave the venue.
•Face masks are to be worn by entrants, support staff, race officials, and medical staff at all times except when racing.
•Starts will be carried out in batches if there are more than 50 entrants.
•Strictly no spectators are allowed in the demarcated competition area.
•There will be no prize-giving or medal award ceremony afterwards, results will be posted and medal winners will be notified on how to collect medals.
•Change rooms and ablutions will be regularly sanitised during the event.

Food and drinks will be on sale at the Covid-19 compliant restaurant facilities at the VLC main club. Alcohol may not be brought into the venue.
